January 2021 Kromrey PTO Newsletter

Dear Kromrey Families,

We hope you and your families are doing well and having an excellent start to 2021. Despite the many changes during this school year, the PTO remains committed to supporting your students and the Kromrey staff. Our board has continued to meet monthly to do what we can to positively impact the school community. As families move to different cities, students graduate to high school, and board terms expire, there are always leadership positions available with the PTO. Are you interested? We would love to work with you. All Kromrey parents & guardians are invited to apply for a board position! The open positions include Treasurer, Events Lead, Fundraising Lead, Communications Lead, Sunshine Fund Lead, and Website manager. To apply, please fill out this simple form by February 14, 2021. Joining the PTO strengthens the school & family partnership by organizing events, funding classroom and school programs that are not covered in the school budget, and creating community. The PTO is in a great position with new organizational systems set in place for longevity and effectiveness. A new set of PTO Bylaws was approved by the school & district to help guide the Kromrey PTO into the future. Being a part of this organization would be a positive experience for you and a chance to make a difference in our community. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at KromreyPTO@gmail.com.

Virtual Coffee Chat / Café Virtual The PTO’s commitment to creating community remains strong. Although we've had new challenges, we will continue to do our best to connect families. On Friday, January 29, 2021 from 9:15 am to 9:45 am (ENGLISH) & 11:45 am to 12:15 pm (SPANISH), you are invited to attend a Virtual Coffee Break with the PTO. This will be a forum to meet a few new people, visit with old friends and share how you are doing! There will be a short introduction from the PTO and 3 breakout sessions to create smaller groups for socializing. We know this time is not ideal for everyone’s work and school schedules but for a weekday meeting, we thought an early time after the virtual school day begins has the best possibility of parents or guardians being able to attend. Are you interested? We’d love to see you! Please sign up using the Google Forms on this page - ENGLISH or SPANISH. You will receive an email with the Zoom Link by January 28, 2021.

The PTO wants to hear from you!

As part of PTO we are asking parents to please fill out this short survey, by visiting this link. Your responses are important for planning and better serve our community. Family Survey >>

Masks Please remember that students will be required to properly wear masks that are effective for preventing the spread of Covid-19 during in-person instruction. Please visit the CDC website to learn more about choosing the correct mask and how to wear a mask.

Mask Drive

Please join the Kromrey Student Council in its MASK DRIVE.

The Kromrey Student Council is hosting a Mask Drive for students who may need a mask after the return to school. They will also donate masks to the residents of Attic Angels. Please donate handmade or store bought masks. There is a box for donations in between the front doors at Kromrey during school hours.

Thank you to the Student Council for your hard work and commitment to helping Kromrey students and residents of Attic Angels. Thank you to the Kromrey Community for your donations.

Dine Locally Campaign

Our local businesses are some of the largest supporters of our schools and school organization fundraisers. Rather than hosting a “Restaurant Night” for the PTO to raise money through a restaurant’s sales, it’s time to “turn the tables!” To show our gratitude, please dine locally to support our local businesses during these difficult times! The PTO will be highlighting a different business each week during the month of February via Facebook & Instagram! If you know a restaurant who would like to be highlighted, please send your contact info to KromreyPTO@gmail.org.

Trot-a-thon

During November, all Kromrey and Glacier Creek Middle School students had the opportunity to participate in a Virtual Trot-a-thon. This was a virtual event to motivate & inspire students to walk and run. It was optional and non-competitive. Students were encouraged to set a time goal, log their minutes and submit their totals. Kromrey students ran or walked a total of 20,116 minutes!

If you are interested in chairing a “live” event next year when it is safe to do so, please email us at www.KromreyPTO.org.

Playwrights for change

The Kromrey PTO donated $500 to provide all 8th-grade students at Kromrey the opportunity to participate in a virtual five-week writer's workshop to write a short play. They will be mentored by Ms. Frawley & Ms. Holman and collaborating on this unit with the Children's Theater of Madison (CTM). CTM partners with the American Alliance for Theater & Education (AATE) to offer students the chance to submit their plays to a playwriting contest called "Young Playwrights for Change". Each year this organization creates a theme for students to consider in writing their plays. The theme this year is "No One is Alone."

From AATE -" In Year 7, Young Playwrights for Change is looking for plays that address the topic "No One Is Alone." We are all interconnected, and our actions affect each other, even in isolation. What one person does may affect others in unexpected or unintended ways. Yet, in our loneliest hour, we still depend on each other for food, water, shelter, and more. To paraphrase the poem by John Donne, No one is an island. Have you ever felt alone in a crowd? Or accepted by strangers? What can make us reach across a barrier, group, or isolating situation to connect with someone? In what ways can creativity create bridges between the isolated or lonely?" Students will write short plays as part of this writing workshop, which will be offered outside of the universal synchronous schedule. Meetings are held in the afternoons after 2:00 once per week from January 18-February 20 exact dates TBD.

Students will have an opportunity to submit their plays to the Young Playwrights for Change contest. If one of our students' work is selected, that student will have a chance to have their play staged (most likely virtually) by CTM at the Spring Young Playwrights Festival. That student will work with CTM staff to help produce the short play! All Kromrey 8th graders will have a chance to view the recording of the Spring Young Playwrights Festival.
